I am filled with a tremendous amount gratitude and excitement in reaching out to you all as we approach the end of another amazing semester at York International. The entire York Community has so much to be proud of as we look back on the fall 2021 semester:

I am always proud to be a York Mustang and serve this amazing community, and looking back on the 2021 fall semester makes me especially grateful. Please join me by taking some time to have a conversation with your students on what they are proud of accomplishing this semester.
I know this message may make it sound as if Semester I is “already in the books” but please remember we have two more weeks to go! Semester I officially ends Friday, December 17.
Here are some important calendar reminders and exciting events still taking place over the next two weeks:
Interim Benchmark Assessments Grades 2-11
These assessments will be administered the week of December 6 – December 10. These tests are designed to show us how well students learned what teachers taught during that last 3 months. These are very important tests - please make sure your student is here and ready to do their best on their test day. Please visit the following LINK for the testing schedule.
York’s Adopt a Family Food Drive
York students will be supporting families anonymously within our community for the holidays! Each grade level group is currently collecting donations to provide a meal basket filled with food and a small gift or activity for the family to enjoy this holiday season. The “Adopt a Family” Food Drive collection will be held from November 29th - December 10th.
Two-Hour Delayed Start - Wednesday, December 8
As we continue to “level up” in Mapleton with data-driven instruction and quality assessments, plan time is essential for our teachers to review and adapt lesson plans with thought and intention to provide students with the best possible instruction every school day.
To assure we continue to greet our students with rigorous and relevant instruction, we are introducing three late start days to give our teachers back some of the valuable plan time essential to student engagement:

We will work together to define a renewed focus for this special age group of students, rooted in support, compassion, and connection. Welcome Back to In-Person Learning! - Monday, January 11
Posted by Eriksen Van Etten on 1/8/2021 9:00:00 AMGood Morning York!
There are definitely more professional ways to start a community message, but I can't contain myself here:
We are SO EXCITED to welcome our students back to in-person learning this upcoming Monday, January 11.
We sincerely hope you have had a relaxing winter break and are ready to join us back at school. The New Year Holiday always provides an opportunity for a fresh start, and this year more than ever I know we are all ready to look ahead for a brighter future. I have reflected on the many challenges our school community has had to navigate in 2020 and am filled with an abundance of gratitude for how much we have achieved. The fall semester provided us with many twists and turns, but the creativity and perseverance required to stick together as a strong York Community will be our rock and foundation moving into 2021.
On December 18, 2020 I sent home a message to all families explaining that as of that moment Mapleton was planning on returning to in-person learning after the Winter Break. We are very excited to share that York Teachers and Staff have been busy this week preparing for all students in grades K-12 to return to the York Building for classes starting this upcoming Monday, January 11. We know that there will certainly be challenges ahead as we continue to navigate all aspects of the pandemic, but with the same strong commitment to keeping our community as safe as possible, we will have a successful spring semester at York.
I wanted to reach out to students and parents to share some reminders for returning to in-person learning this Monday:
- All safety protocols from Semester I are still in place at York - students will be required to wear masks, adhere to social-distancing guidelines, and stay with their cohort at all times. Please review our Roadmap to Reopening for any reminders needed.
- Classes start each day at 8:10am and end at 3:25pm daily (no change). In order to help uphold the safety guidelines, we ask that students do not arrive on campus earlier than 7:55am and leave campus in the afternoon by 3:35pm. Please enter and exit the building using the same pathways and guidelines as semester I.
- Students please remember to bring your mask (an extra clean one if possible), online device charged/ready to go, any school supplies you took home with you in November, and warm clothes as we still hope to spend time outside throughout the day weather permitting.
- Remember to have fun! - York has always been a place of joy and learning for our community. You all embraced these characteristics in the fall. We are so excited to have you all back in person to pick up right where we left off!
In addition to this message, all families will be receiving a personal email today from the York Front Office that will share a handful of details specific to your student’s grade level area. Please reach out before 4:00pm today if you have any questions we can help support.
Students please enjoy this last weekend of your Winter Break. Take the time to organize your school supplies for Monday and get some good sleep so you are refreshed and ready for Monday morning.
Even though we certainly have missed all the aspects of school at York, more than anything we have missed YOU – the students. We are extremely excited to have you back this Monday, January 11.
Sincerely,
-Mr.
Sinceramente,
-Señor. Van Etten

I want to take the time on our last school day together before Winter Break to reflect on the Fall Semester of 2020. What a semester it has been!
In planning for the 2020 Fall Semester there was certainly a lot of unknown to navigate as a school community. As we look back, the York Staff wants you all to know how incredibly grateful we are for your positive energy, commitment, and incredible resilience as we worked to educate and support our students. I am so proud of our students and staff for successfully navigating in-person learning, "roll out to remotes", and even the last three weeks of full-remote learning. You didn't just survive all these strange circumstances, you THRIVED! As a staff in August we spent time discussing the fact that York has always been a wonderful school with a large amount of happiness. We committed as a group to no matter what challenges were ahead, we would always make York a place of Joy for our students. Little did we know that the community, parents, and students were ready to bring the Joy to us! From the bottom of our hearts thank you! Thank you for being part of this wonderful school community!
Please enjoy your Winter Break! I look forward to school starting back on Monday, January 11 with student back to in-person learning at York!
Happy Holidays,
-Mr.

Felices vacaciones,
-Señor. Van Etten

Bringing the 2020 Fall Semester to a Close!
Posted by Eriksen Van Etten on 12/9/2020 12:00:00 PMHello York Families,
As we find ourselves approaching the end of another semester at York International, I want to reach out to each of you with some reminders and updates regarding grades and report cards. December in any school year is filled with a wide variety of emotions around the holidays, winter break, and the finalizing of report card grades. We know that this has been a challenging year in many ways, especially with us wrapping up the semester remote. Even with all the challenges it has also been an amazing year filled with so many accomplishments by our students and staff. My hope is that the information below helps to clarify ways we can all academically support our York Students complete the end of Fall Semester 2020 on a positive note!
As always if you have any questions or are in need of support please feel free to reach out to your student's teacher, the main office, or my direct office.
I will be sending out more information next week as it will be our last week of remote learning before Winter Break. Keep up the wonderful job committing to learning remotely these next eight school days.
Thank you,
-Mr. Van Etten
LINK - York Updated School Calendar 2020-21
High School Students 9-12
Semester I will end as planned at 3:30pm Friday, December 18.
- At the beginning of Semester I in August 2020 the high school staff established a rotation calendar for all high school students to shift between their core classes. - The main goal with this work was to design a schedule rotation that still allows students to earn credit at a pace that keeps them on track for their planned graduation year.
- In order to ensure that all learning standards in each content were covered, students needed to engage in four complete rotations.
- Even throughout schedule changes and remote learning teachers have been able to work with students to still engage in all necessary standards.
- This means that the Fall Semester will end as planned at 3:30pm on Friday, December 18.
- Teacher will use professional work time in January to finalize report cards.
- Report cards will be mailed home for each student starting Wednesday, January 6.
In-Progress GRADES have been updated and posted to be as accurate as possible in Infinite Campus for all classes as of today - Wednesday, December 9.
High School Earning Credit Summary: Curriculum in high school is adopted by the Mapleton Board of Education and developed by content teachers to ensure that students have the ability to work towards mastery of all Colorado State Learning Standards.
- In all grades 9-12 students must show evidence of learning to pass their classes and ultimately earn credit towards graduation.
- In our International Baccalaureate Program students have the ability to show evidence of learning through a wide variety of assessments - written tests, oral presentations, seminars, and even completion of projects.
- Schedules are developed at York to ensure that if students are passing classes and earning credit, they stay on track for their planned graduation year.
- Even though we have many plans available to support off-track students, if a student fails to earn credit within any year of high school it can negatively impact their plans for graduation.
- The minimum credits earned required by Mapleton Public Schools for a student to move on to the next grade level is outlined below:
- Move from 9th to 10th Grade
- 3.0 credits minimum
- Move from 10th to 11th Grade
- 8.5 total credits minimum, 4.5 must be in core classes (Science, Math, English, Social Studies)
- Move from 11th to 12th Grade
- 14.0 total credits minimum, 8.5 must be in core classes (Science, Math, English, Social Studies)
- Gradutation
- 22 total credits spread out within specific locations on a transcript.
- York's PSOC works will all 11th and 12th grade students on their individualized graduation plans.
- Move from 9th to 10th Grade
*We feel is it extremely important for all students and families to understand the information above due to the fact that Friday, December 18 is the official end of the semester and the last opportunity for high school students to influence their Semester I grades. This is normal practice, but in the environment of remote learning it is very important that students are constantly in communication with their teacher and checking their grades to know where they stand. After Friday, December 18 grades will be complete and credit will be earned (as normal) by passing grades.
Parent/Guardian Support: Please continue to remind students that showing up to class during remote learning is just as important as turning in all assignments and assessments. Attendance is taken daily for each remote class. Missing assigments during remote learning have just as much of a negative impact on grades as during in-person learning. Please take some time to review your student's grades in Inifinite Campus this week and next. - There is still time before Friday, December 18 for students to improve their grades! If you have any questions please reach out to the teacher or the main office for support.
Middle School Students 6-8
CHANGE - Semester I will end on a new date - 3:30pm Friday, January 22.
- At the beginning of Semester I in August 2020 the middle school staff established a rotation calendar for all middle school students to shift between their core classes.
- In order to ensure that all learning standards in each content were covered, students needed to engage in three complete rotations.
- Due to cohorts having to "roll out to remote" in November and extensions to Thanksgiving and Winter Break, the third rotation was going to be cut drastically short if Semester I ended as originally planned on Friday, December 18.
- These circumstances resulted in the Middle School Staff working to develop a plan where two weeks could be added back to Rotation #3 in Semester I.
- The first two weeks returning from Winter Break in January 2021 will now be the time used to complete all learning standards in Rotation #3 from Semester I.
- Teacher will use professional work time in the end of January to finalize report cards.
- Report cards will be mailed home for each student starting Monday, February 1.
In-Progress GRADES have been updated and posted to be as accurate as possible in Infinite Campus for all classes as of today - Wednesday, December 9.
There is still time before Friday, January 22 for students to improve their grades! If you have any questions please reach out to the teacher or the main office for support.
Elementary Students K-5
Semester I will end as planned at 3:30pm Friday, December 18.
- Teacher will use professional work time in January to finalize report cards.
- Report cards will be mailed home for each student starting Wednesday, January 6.
Parent/Guardian Support: Please continue to support your student in logging onto their remote classes each day until Friday, December 18. Attendance is taken daily for each remote class. Elementary's overall attendance average is wonderful at the moment!
Teachers have worked diligently to ensure that students are staying on track with their standards of learning throughout our time in person and remote. We look forward to updating you all on your student's progress in early January, and then continuing with this great work into Semester II.

Welcome Back from Thanksgiving Break!
Posted by Eriksen Van Etten on 12/4/2020 3:00:00 PMGood Afternoon York Families,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well! I also greatly hope you have been able to enjoy a restful Thanksgiving Break. I am reaching out today on behalf of the entire York Staff to let you know that we are very excited to return to remote learning this upcoming Monday, December 7. We have missed our students and can't wait to see them all back online next week!
Remote Learning Details
Our first request is for families to review all the information posted to The Desk of the Director on November 17, 2020 - "The Remote Learning Adventure Starts". (Scroll Down in this web page) The details in this post outline very helpful information regarding the following:
- All major upcoming calendar adjustments - For example: Monday, December 7- Friday December 18 all students resume remote learning online, led by York Teachers.
- The York Staff Promise regarding our delivery of remote learning.
- How parents can support their students and teacher's efforts during remote learning.
- Student Responsibilities during remote learning.
Remote Learning Schedules
Our second request is to review the remote learning schedules below that pertain to your student. During the three days of remote learning before Thanksgiving Break our school attendance average was above 90% which is an amazing accomplishment! This speaks volumes towards our students' committment to their education and your support is a big part of that!
Contact for Support
If you have any questions or are in need of support please contact your student's teacher or the main office during our normal office hours (8:00am-3:30pm weekdays).
Even though we will not have students physically at York for the next two weeks, we are greatful to have the ability to still engage them in learning remotely. Please continue to commit to these next two weeks of education as they are still full days of school!
Have a wonderful weekend!

¡semana!

Remote Learning Expectations
Staff , Parents & Students
Overview:
Given the evolving changes with COVID-19 cases in our community and the challenges they introduce, we’ve made the difficult decision to switch to remote learning Wednesday, November 18. This means that all Mapleton Public Schools, including York International, will be fully remote beginning this Wednesday, November 18. Here is a short outline of the upcoming calendar:
- Tuesday, November 17– In Person Learning at York for all students who have not otherwise already been “rolled out” to remote. Let’s make this a GREAT last day together!
- Wednesday, November 18 – Friday, November 20 – Remote Learning Online for all York Students grades K-12 led by York Teachers.
- Saturday, November 21 – Sunday, December 6 – Thanksgiving Break. No School.
- Monday, December 7- Friday December 18- All students resume remote learning online, led by York Teachers.
- Friday, December 18- Last day of Semester I at York.
- Saturday, December 19 – Sunday, January 10 – Winter Holiday Break
- Monday, January 11- We fully intend to return to in-person learning with students at York, barring any additional changes from CDPHE or Tri-County Health.
Please prepare your students for remote learning to start this Wednesday, November 18. Classes will be held live over Microsoft Teams, attendance will be taken daily, and students will be expected to complete all assignments. The good news is we know our students are ready! They have been practicing with our wonderful teachers for weeks in preparation for remote learning.
The York Staff will:
We, as staff, will support your children’s success by providing a learning platform with activities that include:
- Provide high-quality instruction in a supportive learning environment that allows opportunities for all children to access the State’s student academic achievement standards remotely.
- Provide parents reasonable access to staff.Staff will be available for consultation with parents during school hours by arranged appointment. Staff emails are listed on our web page.
- Make all correspondence sent home available in English and Spanish or other languages as requested by parents.
- Make available copies of Colorado State Standards, descriptions of intervention programs, before and after school academic opportunities, special education, and or ELL information. These services will continue through remote learning. Information regarding any modifications will be sent out by each support department.
- Provide all academic instruction through Canvas and Teams. Instruction will be a mix between synchronous and asynchronous modes.
- Synchronous - Students will have a scheduled timeeach day to meet with their teacher in a 15 to 30-minute time (age appropriate) block. Teachers will inform parents of this live group teaching time. When students are not with their teacher for their group on-line instruction, they will have independent learning activities.
- Asynchronous / Flipped Learning - Students will also have access to some pre-recorded lessons and off-line learning activities. Examples include letter/word learning activities, reading activities with hard copy books, writing journals, science activities, number sense activities, math workbook, and project-based assignments.
- Attendance will be taken twice daily, 9:00 am and 12:45 pm for Elementary and during each period for Middle School – High School. Students must be logged into their Canvas/Teams page and actively participating in class for attendance to count.
- Our District technology department is ready to assist with Chromebook and iPad concerns and can be accessed through email: helpdesk@mapleton.us
York Parent Responsibilities
We know that York International moving to remote learning for a short amount of time is a difficult shift for some of our families. In this environment of pandemic-related constraints, we know we still have a responsibility to ensure our students are learning, growing, and achieving their academic best. To that end, we continue to ask of everyone to give their best effort towards the academic success of our students and reach out for support as needed. The information below outlines the highest level of expectations, knowing that challenges will arise and we will work together to find solutions.
- It is imperative that your students attend all remote classes daily. To the best of your ability, protect the daily schedule 9:00am – 2:15pm from alternative activities, prioritize school time. Monitor engagement during live lessons and work completion of asynchronous activities and assignments. Staff will notify administration if students are not participating in class and completing daily assignments. Call 303-853-1600 to excuse your child if they are going to be absent.
- Ensure your children have a distraction free learning workspace. When possible provide a written schedule, timers, and work supplies (materials) as needed to support classroom assignments. Charge their equipment nightly. Notify the school if you are missing materials to set up an appointment to receive school supplies provided by Mapleton School District. The school will notify parents when materials are provided.
- Children should be dressed in accordance with the District’s Dress Code Policy, setting up at a table or desk while in live sessions. Student workspace should be away from the television and/or video games during school hours. Encourage your children to work as independently as possible, make sure they are the “active learner” during all assignments, online and off.
- Support your children with their schoolwork with adequate internet service for streaming video. Ensure student technology is working and charged (for tech help, contact helpdesk@mapleton.usif problems arise with school equipment).
- Participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to your children’s education. Notify classroom teachers during their “office hours” if you have questions or concerns, avoid interrupting teachers during their live instruction.
- Allow students to complete all online assessments without parent support. (Video should be on during all assessments.) It is extremely important especially during assessments that we get an accurate record of your child’s independent knowledge. This information allows teachers to design differentiated targeted instruction.
- Promoting positive use of my child’s extracurricular time. Monitor your child’s chat to ensure they are using positive digital citizenship. District platforms should only be used during school hours (7:55 am – 3:30 pm) for school appropriate activities. All your communications are recorded by the District.
- Provide school with updated current contact information as it changes.
- Staying informed about my child’s education and communicating with the school and responding as appropriate. Check IC and their Canvas grades for updated academic progress and attendance.
Student Responsibilities
York International hold students to high expectations regarding their academics, behavior, and service to the community as an International Baccalaureate Program. The following includes a list of remote learning expectations for all York Students:
- Teachers will be supplying remote daily schedules for all classes during school days. It is the expectation that students attend those specific class schedules. It is our primary goal to have all live classes take place within the hours of 9:00am - 2:15pm.
- Students please participate with online activities. Have camera on during live worktime with teachers. (Preferred, but not an expectation at the high school level). Leave your mute button on unless you are specifically talking. Answer Teams call from your teachers during the school hours. Communicate appropriately in the chat box. Students should check their email, Canvas in-box and chats daily.
- Attendance will be taken morning and afternoon, along with each individual class period for secondary students.
- Poor attendance has the ability to negatively impacts academic progress – students need to be present during live instruction.
- Follow District Dress Code daily, work at your designated study area away from distractions, turn off the television, music, phone conversations, and video games during school hours. Actively participate in your live lesson.
- Complete all assignments on/offline. Notify your teacher if you are unable to access an assignment or need future academic assistance to complete the assignment.
- Give school notices and announcements to parents/guardians the day that they are handed out.
- Work hard and study in all subjects and strive for success in all academics.
- Use positive, respectful digital citizenship practices.
Please commit to our process of remote learning!
This is not a break from school, but a temporary shift in the way we learn together.
Stay Safe – Keep Learning – Attend School – Make Every Day Count!

Expectativas de aprendizaje remoto
Personal, padres y estudiantes

Schedule Updates Including Remote Learning
Posted by Eriksen Van Etten on 11/16/2020 3:00:00 PMGood Afternoon York Families,
I hope this message finds you all well and staying safe! I want to start by sincerely thanking you for your commitment and support to York International. Over the last few months I have been constantly reminded of how special our York Community truly is, and what an honor it is to serve the students at this school. You and your children make us so proud!
At this moment in time you hopefully have received and reviewed a message from Mapleton’s Board of Education and Superintendent Ciancio explaining details of remote learning in our near future for all Mapleton Schools. I am following up with this information from my office in hopes to clarify next steps for York.
As was expressed in the Mapleton District Communication, given the evolving changes with COVID-19 cases in our community and the challenges they introduce, we’ve made the difficult decision to only stay in-person through tomorrow – Tuesday, November 17, 2020. This means that all Mapleton Public Schools, including York International, will be fully remote beginning this Wednesday, November 18. Here is a short outline of the upcoming calendar:
- Tuesday, November 17 – In Person Learning at York for all students who have not otherwise already been “rolled out” to remote. Let’s make this a GREAT last day together!
- Wednesday, November 18 – Friday, November 20 – Remote Learning Online for all York Students grades K-12 led by York Teachers.
- Saturday, November 21 – Sunday, December 6 – Thanksgiving Break. No School.
- Monday, December 7 – Friday, December 18 – All students resume remote learning online led by York Teachers.
- Friday, December 18 - Last day of Semester I at York.
- Saturday, December 19 – Sunday, January 10 – Winter Holiday Break
- Monday, January 11 - We fully intend to return to in-person learning with students at York, barring any additional changes from CDPHE or Tri-County Health.
Teachers will be getting information out to all students and their parents or guardians on Tuesday, November 17 that will include remote learning schedules to finish out our week before Thanksgiving Break. For now, please prepare your students for remote learning to start this Wednesday, November 18. Classes will be held live over Microsoft Teams, attendance will be taken daily, and students will be expected to complete all assignments. The good news is we know our students are ready! They have been practicing with our wonderful teachers for weeks in preparation for remote learning.
At the end of each morning announcement to students I remind them to stay safe, keep learning, and “make the day count!” I know that our switch to remote learning will be successful with their commitment to these points.
Thank you all again for your ongoing support, and look for more information coming shortly from your students’ teachers.
With much gratitude,
-Mr.

We are so excited to celebrate the Halloween Holiday at York International next Friday, October 30! All students in grades K-12 will be allowed to wear costumes all day, but we ask that the following guidelines are in place:
- No “costume masks.” Students must wear their normal masks properly.
- No weapons, face painting, or blood.
- Students should come to school in their costumes and they can keep them on throughout the day.
- In order to follow our safety guidelines, families will not be allowed to enter the building.
- We are asking that no treats are brought into the building by students or families this year. - York will be purchasing all treats and safely distributing them to students.
- We will be celebrating Halloween with some safe and fun activities throughout the day at school.
Spirit Week
We will be celebrating Spirit Week at York for Elementary (K-5) and High School (9-12) grades! Middle School (6-8) celebrated their spirit week earlier this month. Spirit Week is a tradition at York that we didn't want to let pass by this fall without enjoying the fun! Please know that the following themes were chosen by the students and will be in place for each day:
- Elementary:
- Monday (10/26) - International / Culture Day
- Tuesday (10/27) - Sports / Jersey Day
- Wednesday (10/28) - Pajama Day
- Thursday (10/29) - Crazy Hair Day
- Friday (10/30) - Halloween Costume Day
- High School:
- Monday (10/26) - Dress Like your Teacher Day
- Tuesday (10/27) - Twins/Squad Day
- Wednesday (10/28) - Decades Day
- Thursday (10/29) - Sports/Jersey Day
- Friday (10/30) - Halloween Costume Day
REMINDER - High School (9-12) Remote Learning Day is Tuesday, October 27
- As we move forward with the work of all High School Teachers for Project LIFT this year, Tuesday, October 27 will be a planned remote learning day for all students in grades 9-12.
- In person learning will be taking place at York for all students in grades K-8.
REMINDER - With the cold weather on the way please remember to bring warm clothes to school each day!
- Each morning we will still need to spend a few minutes outside before entering the building safely. Also, we safelty have recess and mask breaks outside as much as possible.
- Please remember to have your student bring all necessary warm clothes to school on cold days to spend time outside.
Safety Reminders!
Take the Pledge to Protect and help keep Mapleton healthy!
In the last few weeks, Adams County has seen a troubling spike in confirmed COVID‐19 cases. This rise in caseloads has threatened to move Adams County to Level 3 of the State's Safer at Home Public Health Order. Among other restrictions, Level 3 status would reduce restaurant capacity and potentially force fitness centers and gyms to offer only remote options.
To remain at Level 2, Adams County worked with Tri-County Health Department (TCHD) to finalize the Adams County COVID-19 Mitigation Plan to help control the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Residents are encouraged to access free COVID-19 testing at Water World if they have symptoms or have come into contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive.
Help keep our communities safe and healthy!
- Limit small and private gatherings
- Wear a mask at all small group gatherings
- Social distance in public – stay 6 feet apart
- Wash your hands often
- Stay home if you feel sick
- Be extra safe if you are in a high-risk category
- Get tested if you have symptoms
